In the wake of a catastrophic mudslide in Nepal that struck Gyirong border port area in Tibet’s Shigatse city on August 26, the Amity Foundation has swiftly mobilized emergency relief operations, with the first batch of supplies reaching the affected area within 24 hours.

The disaster, triggered by a mudslide on the Nepalese side of the border, caused extensive damage and left many missing near the Gyirong Port, according to Xinhua News Agency. In response, China National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Emergency Management activated a national Level-II emergency response.

On the same day as the disaster, the Amity Foundation launched its emergency protocol. By evening, it had procured 200 flashlights, 200 power banks, 30 cases of self-heating rice (20 boxes per case), 30 cases of ham sausages (90 pieces per case), 30 cases of milk (24 bottles per case), and 30 cases of drinking water (24 bottles per case). The supplies were loaded overnight and dispatched from Lhasa, arriving at Gyirong Town at 2:00 PM on August 27.

Accompanying the convoy was the Tibet Blue Sky Rescue Team, which is now collaborating with the Amity Foundation and has reported to the forward command post to coordinate operations as directed.

Second Wave of Aid

With support from the Tencent Charity Foundation’s “Disaster Relief – Hourly Delivery” initiative, a second shipment of supplies by Amity left Lhasa on the morning of August 27. The cargo includes raincoats, rain boots, headlamps, flashlights, power banks, and generators, and is expected to reach Gyirong County in the early hours of August 28.
